About
the record

Make A Sound presents the perspective of a young parent as they grapple with the horrors of the war in the Middle East. The title track takes a stand against the futility of blind hatred, initiating an intimate meditation on the nature of human solidarity.

Oded Tzur defines Make A Sound as a protest album, like a postcard from the sanity we lost that’s hoping to somehow be found. Without words, the album touches on emotions of grief and anguish, but also on a sense of hope that strikes root in the act of music making itself.

The deep sense of communion that characterized the recording session, called upon by Tzur as a free improvisation date dedicated to the subject matter, sets the stage for a solemn and yet uninhibited group introspection about the responsibility we all have toward one another.

Tzur’s iconic sound on the tenor finds a strikingly poetic alignment with Gilad Hekselman’s guitar and Joe Martin’s bass, with whom he has performed in NYC and internationally. The masterful drums of Nasheet Waits and haunting sound of Vanraj Shastri on the sarangi contribute to this uniquely engulfing ensemble.

“Even if this album makes a difference, it’s a microscopic difference in a crisis of astronomic proportions” says Tzur. “Nevertheless, it needed to be made. We are all tiny little lights - we can only make a big light together.”
